In the Boat Theatre Company

In the Boat Theatre Company is an integrated company of 16 adults with disability and three artists (Mary Turner, Lena Sass and Val Regan) who meet each week at the Heeley Institute in Sheffield.

Each year there are three terms, one of skills development, one of devising and rehearsing, and one of performance.  The original show tours to smaller venues in the region such as the Crucible Studio and Otley Courtroom Arts Centre.  In the Boat was one of the first companies specifically for adults with learning disabilities, starting up in 1984.  We believe is it an example of best practice in this area.

The aim of the company is to develop the talents of its members so that they present a positive view of people with disabilities.  It also encourages them to take part in the wider cultural environment, to lead workshops themselves and to develop special interests such as music, visual art and digital technology.

The members act as role models for their peers by their standards of professionalism, and are asked to lead discussions at conferences and present workshops on a variety of issues such as bullying, relationships and independent living.  Membership is limited and recruited through an advertised audition given by the group when a member leaves.

The company has an extensive portfolio of work including the production of many touring performances, songs, books, films and animation.

Their international work has taken them to Germany, Lithuania and Norway; it has also involved skills sharing work with groups from France, Romania and Greece.

Outcomes for the members include:

·        Company members leading inspirational workshops for others with disability

·        Performances in universities, streets and theatres

·        Development of social skills in public places

·        Entry into and respect from the wider community

·        Development of individual skills and interests in the wider arts

·        An appreciation by the relatives of the abilities of the participants

·        Increased confidence
