Arts and Disabilities

Action Space Mobile pioneered arts work with disability and has been working with adults and children with physical and mental disabilities through the arts for over 30 years.

Our team of specialists, work with adults with disabilities as part of an integrated programme, which currently consists of two theatre companies:

IN THE BOAT THEATRE COMPANY - Sheffield based - tours nationally and internationally

CROSS THE SKY THEATRE COMPANY - Barnsley based - tours across Yorkshire

and a children's holiday arts project, entitled:

VISIBILITY - Barnsley, Sheffield and Wakefield (other locations as commissioned)

In addition we offer activities or workshops working with day centres or other groups.  The theatre companies also deliver advocacy workshops / programmes and perform at events such as Mencap celebration days and 'Under the Stars' nightclub event.  We have worked with a number of partners to develop this social evening for adults with learning disabilities in Sheffield and the wider area.

All of our artists have enhanced CRB checks and are fully insured.

Our arts professionals are specialists in this field and are trained in techniques which develop cognitive, motor and social skills such as:

·        Sherbourne Movement

·        Kodaly Method

·        Intensive Interaction

·        Contact Improvisation

·        Forum Theatre

We work with all levels of physical and learning disability, including adults and children who are pre-verbal and or 'locked in' as well as those with autistic spectrum disorders and challenging behaviour.

Our work has a number of benefits but is particularly effective in developing the fundamentals of social behaviour:

·        Sharing personal space

·        Using and understanding eye contacts

·        Using and understanding facial expressions

·        Taking turns in exchanges of behaviour

·        Using and understanding non-verbal communication

·        Using speech and other vocalisations with meaning

·        Concentration and attention span

We use a variety of art forms: movement, music, drama, film and live action and visual arts.  The aim is twofold: to perform the art and to develop the personal confidence and creativity of the participant gained through achievement.  This confidence is carried over into other fields of activity in day-to-day life.

Resulting outcomes are:

·        Participants leading workshops for others with disability

·        Performances in universities, streets and theatres

·        The confidence for the participants to make their own arrangements to

meet up and go out together
